Opportunities and Challenges in a Modern Electric Grid

Dr. Kalyan K. Sen is President and Chief Technology Officer of Sen Engineering Solutions, Inc. He has extensive experience in power flow control technology and Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS). An IEEE Life Fellow, he is the co-inventor of the Sen Transformer and received the 2026 IEEE PES Robert Noberini Distinguished Contributions to Engineering Professionalism Award.

Dr. Sen served as an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Prairie View A&M University and spent approximately 30 years in industry, working with Westinghouse and Fluor. He contributed to the development, simulation, design, and commissioning of FACTS projects and advanced power flow control technologies.

He holds a BEE from Jadavpur University, an MSEE from Tuskegee University, a PhD from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and an MBA from Robert Morris University. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania and New York.

Since 2002, Dr. Sen has served as an IEEE PES Distinguished Lecturer, delivering more than 250 presentations across 20 countries. His contributions include over 25 peer-reviewed publications, eight issued patents, two books, and three book chapters in power flow control and power electronics.

He is also a Fulbright Specialist and GIAN Scholar and serves on the IEEE SSIT Board of Governors.

Dr. Ramakrishna Kappagantu

Dr. Ramakrishna Kappagantu is an accomplished power-sector expert, independent consultant, technology advisor, and engineering leader with over four decades of experience in India's electrical power industry. During his career with NTPC and POWERGRID, he contributed to real-time power-system operations, management of the 55 GW Southern Regional Grid, power markets, SCADA-EMS, and India's first Smart Grid Pilot Project. A dedicated IEEE volunteer for over three decades, he served as Director of IEEE Region 10 (Asia-Pacific) during 2015–2016.

A dedicated IEEE volunteer for more than three decades, he served as Director of IEEE Region 10 (Asia-Pacific) during 2015–2016 , as a member of the IEEE Board of Directors, and in leadership roles across IEEE's Member and Geographic Activities, Power & Energy Society, and several regional and global committees. His contributions span professional development, global collaboration, volunteer engagement, and the advancement of engineering communities.

His contributions to engineering and professional leadership have earned him several prestigious global recognitions, including the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) Larry K. Wilson Transnational Award and the IEEE India Council Lifetime Achievement Award.

He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, an M.Tech in Automation and Control from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad, and a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from MNIT Jaipur.

He is a Life Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) and a committed advocate of integrating human values into technology and management. He believes that engineering and innovation achieve their greatest purpose when they serve humanity.
